Prof Howard Gluckman

Founder, Managing Director & Senior Lecturer

Prof Gluckman is the director of the Implant and Aesthetic Academy, which is a post-graduate training facility in South Africa. With a passion for sharing knowledge and sharpening the skills of other practitioners, Prof Gluckman is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the dental industry.

The groundwork

After completing his dental training at the University of Witwatersrand in 1990 and spending a number of years in general practice, Prof Gluckman completed a 4-year, full- time degree in Oral Medicine and Periodontics at the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, which he completed with distinction (Cum Laude) in 1998. Not one to rest on his laurels, Prof Gluckman recently completed his PhD titled “Partial Extraction Therapy: Past, Present and Future” passing Summa Cum Laude at the University of Szeged in Hungary, under the supervision of Professor Katalin Nagy. 

A passion for implant training and enhancing the talents of dental professionals across the world In addition to running his full-time private practice in Cape Town, Prof Gluckman is also the co-founder and director of the Implant and Aesthetic Academy (IAA). To date, it’s the only private postgraduate training facility of its kind. Over the last 15 years, the Implant and Aesthetic Academy has grown to become an internationally renowned institution that offers various accredited postgraduate dental courses throughout the year. What’s more, The IAA is recognised by Dentalxp as an accredited training facility for their online externship certificate programmes. He also serves as one of the IAA’s senior lecturers

Sowing the seeds/ sharing the fruits

He was hands-on in the development of the postgraduate Implantology diploma in at the University of Stellenbosch and later at the University of Western Cape. Ultimately, his passion for sharing knowledge became the inspiration for The Implant and Aesthetic Academy, an internationally recognised dental training centre in South Africa offering comprehensive postgraduate dentistry courses by renowned dentists.

Jack of all trades, master of many

In addition to being the author of a monthly Implantology column for the South African Dental Journal, Prof Gluckman also serves on many dental boards and panels These include the South African Society for Dental Implantology, the South African Society for Dental Implantology and the board of the Southern African Association of Osseointegration (SAAO).

Gift of the gab

He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally, and is a member of Dentsply / Friadent’s Master Speakers Programme. He is on the experts; panel of the international educational website Dental XP and is on the Dental XP scientific board.

Dr Mark Bowes

Senior Lecturer

Dr Bowes is a progressive and well-respected dental practitioner. With a passion for minimally invasive treatments and innovation in implantology, his mission is to ensure tooth preservation. He pioneered and developed Digital Smile Design in South African and is the only certified Intelligent Aligner Systems instructor on the continent. Dr Bowes has been a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists since 1997. He currently runs restorative courses with the Implant & Aesthetic Academy in both Johannesburg and Cape Town.

British beginnings

Before opening his Cape Town-based private practice, which specialises in Aesthetic and Complex Restorative Dentistry, Dr Bowes practiced in London for 23 years, and was a member of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry.

Impacting the South African dental landscape

Dr Bowes solidified his status as prolific and accomplished dental practitioner in 2010, when he founded the South African Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry for which he now serves as Past President. Not only are his practical skills vast, but his public speaking talents are equally impressive: he is a registered speaker for the ITI (International Team for Implantology) and has lectured extensively in Southern Africa and internationally, on all aspects of Aesthetic Dentistry.

Transforming smiles across the country

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a powerful innovation developed by Dr Bowes that allows dentists to create a smile that fits the individual patient’s aesthetic and functional needs. But the technology doesn’t just facilitate physical changes: “The most powerful use of DSD is the emotional benefits we see when we allow our patients to be involved in the treatment process. We live in a world where communication is key, DSD is the perfect language, ” adds Dr Bowes.

Spreading the word (and smiles!)

He is a DSD World Master and instructor, the only one in South Africa, and one of only two on the African continent.  He lectures and teaches DSD locally and internationally.

Minimal invasion with maximum results

Dr Bowes has also introduced Intelligent Aligner Systems (IAS) to South Africa.  He is passionate about minimally invasive treatment and uses several forms of short-term adult orthodontics in his aesthetic cases, such as the spring aligner- Inman Aligner, clear removable aligners and fixed braces.  He is presently the only certified instructor for IAS in Africa, and as such, runs many courses to teach fellow dentists.

Dr Riaan Wolfaardt

Senior Lecturer

Dr Wolfaardt has been in the dental industry for almost three decades, and currently forms part of the Implant and Aesthetic Academy’s lecture team, where he facilitates workshops on implant-related prosthodontics in the basic and intermediate implant courses.

On your marks, get set…

In 1994, Dr Wolfaardt graduated from the University of Pretoria with a degree in dentistry, and later received a diploma in dental implantology from the University of Stellenbosch in 2002.

Spreading the word

In addition to walking the walk both surgically and restoratively with his daily practice, he- quite literally- talks the talk and lectures nationally and internationally on dental implantology, too.

A passion for (sharing) knowledge

Not only did Dr Wolfaardt obtain his second implantology diploma from the Implant and Aesthetic Academy in 2011, he currently forms part of the IAA’s lecture team!

Getting with the programme

He formed part of the Nobel Active worldwide, pre-launch programme and served on the executive committee of the South African Society of Dental Implantology (SASDI) for 4 years, as the general practitioner’s representative. Not to mention, he attended the Nobel Biocare world tour conference in 2006 in Sun City, where he presented a focus group session on the topic “How to start out with Implants”.

Dr Bradley Bredekamp

Senior Lecturer

Dr Bredekamp is one of South Africa’s leading periodontists, with more than 17 years as a practicing specialist in periodontics and oral medicine. Dr Bredekamp has a passion for teaching and improving the dental community’s skillset toward improved patient care, and is a senior member of the Academy’s education team.
